Practicial Information

I understand we go to college to get educated. But I think college should be more about practical learning and how to gain skills for a particular career. I say this because so many people are walking into the work field not knowing career skills. They know a lot about different subjects like history, and math, and politics. That is great, but that isn't going to fly for careers. Yes they want you to know things, but that isn't going to help you in a career. So, I believe college should go more towards practical vocational education compared to learning about a specific topic. I also ask myself why do people study Political Science? I love politics myself. Anyone that is around me knows I know everything happening in politics and I have opinions about them. I have taken a few courses about government and politics at Wittenberg, but I wasn't a major because I don't see what you can do with it. All you can do is go to law school. That is wonderful, but it isn't helping you prepare for your career. These days you need to find a major that has practical learning abilities and a major that will guarantee you a job.Don't just study something because, "I'm interested in it, and it sound cool." Ok, when you are looking for a job, it's going to be hard for you because you weren't learning the practical tools for that career you might be looking at going into.

That is something we all need to think about.

Crime at Wittenberg

In the last year at Wittenberg, there have been a total of two different shootings. One happened during homecoming. The other happened over Spring Break on N. Fountain and Cecil Ave. This is a scary thing to be near. I grew up in a very safe neighborhood in Columbus. You don't hear of any of these things. But to hear about a murder happening on the campus even if it wasn't student involvement is really scary. There have been reports or burglaries, theft, cars broken into. I'd like to understand why Wittenberg's campus is not safe? I'd like to understand why Wittenberg's police aren't doing their job to protect the campus and all they do is give citations for underage drinking. This is a serious issue and Wittenberg police need to begin to crack down and do something about this.

Progress as a journalist

I have taken eight different journalism courses while at Wittenberg University. When I first came to Witt, I didn't even know how to write a news lead. I have improved so far on that. I didn't even know how to write a news article. Now I feel much more confident about what I need to do in the future when I write a news article. I want to improve my organization of how I write a story moving forward. That is the only thing I feel like I need to improve on.

I have taken a variety of courses from law of journalism, media literacy, making news, interviewing, media & politics, broadcast news, beginning journalism, advanced news writing. All of these courses will help me understand the field of journalism as I grow as a journalist in the future. I think that Witt's journalism program is really going far. I think the fact they encourage you to do an internship for credit towards the program is a great thing. The courses really make you diverse in the field. You need to do internships in this field most of all. I''m about to do my fourth internship this summer. Those internships are key to the news broadcast industry. I feel like I understand broadcast journalism from the internships I've done, and print and the media industry from all of the course work I've done while as a student at Wittenberg- and I believe that is how you focus on a career and learn to be a journalist.

Greek Life

Many have the stereotype that all people do in fraternities is drink all day long, and party all day long. That's all they can think of. They also say that they will help you get a job if you need it. But that is really far from the truth. In a fraternity you make friends that last a very long time. It is an opportunity to learn about maturity during your college years. You learn about leadership, and how to make decisions.

I remember when I was being recruited for a fraternity. I never thought I honestly would go coming into college. I remember someone telling me when I first went to college, "Want to go to a frat party?" I was thinking to myself..."what's that?" I also remember someone that fraternity trying to recruit me and I said, "Ï'm not interested", thanks. However looking forward it really is a great experience. I was Philanthropy chair for a year for my fraternity. I was very proud of the work I did. I held a relief brunch for Haiti, I did a cancer research benefits brunch and got my fraternity involved in food and clothing drives. I really am proud of the opportunity it gave me. I'm unsure where else I could have been able to do that at. But you can make it what you want it to be. I know that I have been able to do that. You can also get support and assistance on grades, and or even other issues you may have going on.

But don't tell me all fraternities do is drink all day long because that is for sure not the case.

Summer plans

This summer I plan to take a course on screen writing for the documentary institute. I'm very excited about this course. I have a strong interest in documentary film-making. This course is going to give me hands on experience in producing, filming, writing and editing a documentary. I find documentary films very interesting. I am not a big fan of other movies as I am in documentary films. You get to explore different topics you wouldn't be able to explore otherwise from this experience. I hope to potentially pursue a career in broadcast journalism, but this may give me an idea of going into film.

Later this summer I plan to begin my internship at WSYX/WTTE-TV's in Columbus, OH as a news intern. As a news intern, I will be in charge of of working with the producers to write the 11:00 news scripts. As well as those responsibilities, I will be out in the field working with a reporter when there are live shots, or helping to gain information for live shots when needed. I will also be working on the phones, checking beats, and listening to police scanners for shootings, fires, accidents. I will be responsible for assigning stories to reporters to go out if I hear something happening on the police scanners coming into the newsroom. I love television news more than anything else. One I have a stronger appreciation for television news. I believe you actually get to see the story much better by watching television than reading it in the newspaper. The reason I say this is a news report is followed by sound bites, the visual video which is evidence of the story. You have no idea but a newspaper may fabricate things. There is no proof sometimes if the story is accurate from what you are reading. People say that in television you only get sound bites. But that is true for newspapers too. A quote is a sound bite in reality. There is no difference. A television newsroom is also very exciting, because news typically comes first there. In television if there is any breaking news, they are first to broadcast that news unlike a newspaper that is published once a day.

I talked with a producer at NBC4, and he told me that in television news people are relaxing and happen to watch the news. When someone is relaxing they don't happen to be reading a newspaper. It happens to be over coffee. So television news has a form of entertainment to it- even though the news could be sad at times.

Later this summer I plan to be in New York City for two weeks in August with my family.

State bill 5

Governor Kasich took office and his first 100 days, he has done more harm than good to the state of Ohio. He has made it harder for teachers, police officers, fireman and nurses to bargain for collective bargaining. At the same time unions will no longer be allowed to strike if they disagree with something happening in the government. This goes back to my earlier argument that I was trying to point out earlier that as college students we do need to pay attention more towards these issues. Yes this might be a political issue, but I can guarantee everyone knows someone that is a teacher, or has plans here at Wittenberg to become a teacher. As a friend of those that educated you in high school and got you to college, and your friends that are going to become teachers, we should very much look after them and stand up for them. The government wants to cut their pay, end their union rights. How do we expect our teachers to give the best education to our students if they don't get these basic rights? I believe a lot in my high school teachers. I will never let them down. I've heard people say, we need to pay teachers based on performance. My question is: How do you determine that? How do you examine a teacher that is an English honors teacher to a Special Education teacher?? Are you going to base this on a test that a student takes in one day based on anxiety? College kids need to wake up and understand that their kid's education is at risk if they don't stand up for those that educated them.

The inner city schools are bad- there is no question about that. But, it isn't the teacher's fault. It has a lot to do with the student's parents at home. Are they going to bed on time? Are they being fed properly? Are they getting their homework done at home? Are they living in a safe area? Are they being disciplined?

This fall voters will have the chance to go to the polls to vote to repeal this awful law. It is everyone's obligation as a citizen to vote and get out there. There is no excuse for not voting. GET THIS LAW REPEALED. It's awful.

Do I like to blog?

Honestly, I find blogging like writing a journal about what I believe in everyday. Or what I find everyday when I go somewhere. But do I think blogging is journalism not at all. Sadly, many Americans rely on blogs to get their news everyday. Blogs can be used for controversial topics, and also as away to manipulate people's thinking on a specific topic. For example, if I wanted to read things that talk about how bad the republican party is, I'd read a blog for that information. They are for sure slanted in a very interesting direction.

That saying that: Did I like blogging? It was interesting. Not sure if I'd want to blog for a living. I think that's also why I wouldn't want to have my own FOX News talk show. I thought about going into radio news, which I still am interested in doing. But I will not do a liberal news talk, I'd want my show to be strictly on journalism or be a discussion about different issues out there. I feel like a blog is not journalism, it's all opinionated journalism. Great if you want to do that, and great if you want to be a columnist for the New York Times, than this is great practice for that.

I plan to stay in television news and hopefully all my shows will be fair and balanced.

The Killing of Osama

Aha! People on the campus of Wittenberg University are talking about the U.S.'s assult on Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan. For once students are talking about politics. Which brings me back to my earlier blog I wrote earlier. College students do an awful job following politics and getting involved for what they believe in. It must end.  If President Obama was not elected Osama Bin Laden would still be continuing to plot terrorist attacks in the United States. This effects everyone if you think about it or not. In New York, on that awful day 10 years ago, I had a cousin who was on the 76th floor of World Trade Center tower #2. I was very lucky she made it out of the towers and was able to make it to safety after she saw what happened to the first tower. But finally to those that were killed, which was nearly 3,000, closure has finally come. This day effected everyone some how or another.

With the death of Bin Laden, no longer are Americans at risk of as much as they were before of being attacked. Americans are much more safe because of what President Obama's administration was able to do. When I saw student's reactions on facebook (I wasn't able to post anything since my loving grandfather passed away.), I didn't believe we had found Bin Laden. I was equally more impressed by how students saw the news and were watching the news coverage of it happening.

I say USA! USA! USA!! Peace has finally come to our country! Witt students were excited about the news, now they need to get active in other controversial issues and make a difference.

The Royal Wedding

You have no idea how excited I am. I have heard so many students say to me, "Who cares, it's just a wedding." But it's like saying, "who cares about sports, it's just  game." This is so important for me to watch. I am planning on waking up at 5am to watch NBC's live coverage from London on the Royal wedding, but no one at Wittenberg is interested it seems. No one is talking about.

This is a prince marrying a "civilian" I guess you could say. So, why is this not exciting? I am looking forward to more of the media's coverage of the event. I am also looking forward on seeing Kate Middleton's dress. Yes, I'll admit, I sometimes watch for fassion. I wish I was in London for this. I always love being involved when there is news happening.

I also have been a long time fan of Prince Williams. I remember very fondly where I was when Princess Diana died, and I remember her funeral very well when I was 8 years old. I cannot believe Prince Williams is getting married in the same church. 14 years ago- he was walking behind princess Diana's coffin going down the streets of London.

Anyways, my question is: Why isn't there any Royal wedding themed things for entertainment? Lets get excited more!! This is real, not a fantasy! Just something to ponder about I guess?

My job hunt

So, I'm about to be a senior this fall. Oh my! I'm now getting nervous about being a senior. I'm excited that I will graduate, not excited about the college experience ending, but I am ready for a job at the same time.

I feel well prepared for a job. I've gotten a lot from my classes. But I honestly would like to know why our college education is not about practicial experience- and it's only on theory these days. Employers want students to have skills when they walk into the work field from practice not theory. So, why don't majors do a better job of giving students practicial real world experiences in the classroom? In some sense I believe vocational education is much better for students than theory based eduction.

These days, I have found if you want a career in journalism (esp in broadcast journalism), it no longer is about your course work you take anymore. It's about your internships and your experience you have done. Anderson Cooper from CNN never got a degree in journalism, and did a lot of internships to get to where he is at today. If you do those you will get far. I wish a college education was more on co-ops.

But anyways, I guess where I'm going with this, I may not be the best student in the classroom. I may have had a hard time getting the best grades. But in the end, I have a lot of journalism experience particulary in broadcast journalism. I did an internship at WCRS-FM, (a community/Paficica network station), WCMH-TV (NBC station), the Integrated Media Corps, and this summer at WSYX-TV/WTTE-TV (ABC/FOX stations). And, I feel like that is what is going to take me far in life are those experiences than the grades I got in the classroom. I'm not saying I don't care about my grades- because I do, and I wish I got  better grades, and I worked to get decent grades. I have taken a lot from my courses. But what I'm trying to say, is that, I've taken a lot more from broadcasting internships than anything. I have taken things from my courses, particularly news writing, where I learned how to write for newspapers, but I learn more from internships and practicial experience.

I feel like I will be able to get a job in television after graduating with the amount of experience I have as a college student in television news.

What I love about Wittenberg

Oh Wittenberg. I am proud to call this place my home. I remember touring this campus when I was a senior in high school. I was a bit nervous about where my life would go. I was nervous about completeing college. I am now three years into it.

This is the friendliest campus in the world. I have walked on campuses like The Ohio State University, Wooster, Ohio Wesylean University, but no one is as friendly as this campus could ever be. It's hard for me to say what I love about Wittenberg honestly. I really enjoy being able to meet a lot of people here. If I were at a larger school, I think it would be hard to make friends, and obtain leadership positions. Not sure if I would get that at a larger school. I would also not get to know my professors at a larger school as I am now.  I obviously have  lot of passion for my fraternity and College Democrats. I also enjoy when I don't feel overwhelmed writing for the Torch, and doing my radio show at WUSO.

I think what I most love about Witt- is how pretty the campus is. I think that drew me to Wittenberg. Has anyone thought about that? I also feel like this is a campus where you can do whatever you want if you work towards your goals. I have not seen that anywhere else. You want to go into film- you can do that at Witt. The professors will spend endless time with you in their office if you need help on a particular project. You will not find this much access to the professors at a large school.

Wittenberg is a fun place and you can make the experience you want it to be!

Tornado warning

This morning I woke up, and finished homework from last night. I was running late to my class. But as I was leaving I got a text alert saying, "Tornado Warning in Clark County" head to the lowest possible ground. I wasn't sure if I should go to my class at 10:20 or actually follow the text. Knowing that I actually do care about my life, I headed to lower grounds, and realized that missing class in this situation is okay if class was still on.

I've heard people at Wittenberg talk about how we have a bad way of handeling tornado warnings. I'm not sure why students think this. If there is a tornado just go to the lower ground. That's all there is to it...why does there need to be a system in place to make that happen. You are an adult, you know what to do. This isn't the 1st grade.

Tornado warnings are no joke. If there is a tornado, it must be taken seriously. I understand people believe the chances of a tornado hitting are slim, which is true. Although, the events that have happened in the last week, where over 70 people have been killed by tornados, is a scary situation for someone to consider a joke. Those people in the south, didn't think it would happen to them either but it did. It destroyed lives, it destroyed people's homes. It is better to go to lower shelter than to be sorry about it later.

Film at Witt

So, Wittenberg is finally introducing a new film program for this summer. This program will emphasis writing for documentary, and focus on production for documentary film. A total of 5 films will be produced that are like 10 minutes each. Wittenberg has no requirements to take the course, however you do need to submit a 10 page paper in order to be considered for admissions.

I think this is a really cool thing for Wittenberg to have! Wittenberg is an exciting place! You can really do whatever you want if you really pursude professors or work with professors on a program of study of your interest.

One thing for me: At Wittenberg the university doesn't have broadcast journalism courses- although they focus a lot of the courses on print and this course is also focused a bit on online journalism. But, what I have learned. It's all about the internships you get! Writing is so important- and that is what you learn by taking the print journalism and online journalism courses. The production part comes from the internships. Internships are your key into the industry. If you want to go into even print journalism- internships with an "s" are very important. You meet people and are able to network- but you gain practical experience in the field. In this field, your experience is the most valuable thing you need to have! They want to see that you can do it.

I'm not saying don't take journalism classes in college- definetely take those courses- but employers really want take internships very seriously and you will have a top edge over those that do not experience and worked at a business.

So, get internships everyone!!!! Those are what get you jobs! You simply cannot escape it!

Wittenberg's attendance policy

So, why do professors have an attendance policy? Why do they treat students like high school students? I think this is something I'd like to look further into. My parents are professors at The Ohio State University, and they never have such a policy. They tell me, it's up to the students to come to their classes to learn the material. They are adults- and need to learn how to be one. If you don't come to class, you will have trouble on the exams, and in class material. So the responsibility is put on the student and not the professor.

Why at Wittenberg do professors try to baby it's students. Let the students be adult and make their decision if they are going to class or not. You will still have enough students to run a class discussion.

Snow days

So, I woke up throughout the night on Monday night. I looked outside and checked the weather conditions. The sidewalks, my car, everything was so icy. I didn't think we'd have class, but also knowing that I'm in college, you never know if a university will close. The Ohio State University didn't even close- and I was not expecting us to close either when I saw they were planning to be open. But we closed!

Tuesday night- the same thing. Except it turned into rain over night- so I really thought we would have class- but it all worked out and we were closed again.

But I'd like to understand why Thursday? I understand the sidewalks were really bad... but in Columbus all the side walks were awful, the city schools were back in session. I thought it was interesting that Wittenberg was closed and all the schools in Columbus were open. That never happens. It also never happens that Wittenberg has 3 snow days in a row.

But my question is: why did it take forever to remove the ice of the sidewalks compared to other universities and schools?

I loved the snow days not complaining...and want more to come again soon.

Politics at Wittenberg

I'm a Communication major with a Journalism minor. I am very much interested in politics. I love politics in fact. I have been following politics since 1998. But I'm often wondering why don't more students talk about politics? What is it about politics people don't like to talk about or wish to ponder about?

President Obama last night addressed the nation about his plans to move the United States of America forward. He talked about his plans to bring home troops from Afghanistan and Iraq this year, education reform, invoation, and inferstructure. But he also talked briefly about the United States' debt and deficit and how we plan to tackle this issue. My question to people: Do you not care about the future of your country? Do you not care about your fellow citizens? I follow politics and get emotional about it- because I care about my country, the poor and want the best for people. I saw the days of Bush in our country and how things went downhill.

President Obama talked about his plans to reform education- to make sure every single student has a chance to go to college- and how the United States becomes the number one country where citizens graduate from college. Does that not appeal to people?

I think it is important to follow politics in this country. Everyone needs to understand this affect them in a very big way. For example if Bush still were in office- we could still be in Iraq for even longer. This effects students. The health care reform bill- it ends pre-exhisting conditions, but more importantly this effects everyone! You can stay on your parents health care until you are 26.

College kids follow politics- know what is happening in your country! And fight for what you believe in!!

Race at Wittenberg University

What a sad thing that happened on the campus of Wittenberg..... on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the day we celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. King, and his influence to our nation, a student wrote on another student's wall, "White's only, No Colored." This not only angered me, but it made me not understand how our society still is so racist. It has been over fifty years.... how is the country still judging someone on the color of someone. It is really sad that people still have such negative thoughts of African Americans. Racism is going to get worse before it gets better I believe. People are always complaining about African Americans- and always complaining about how they are all on welfare. Maybe that was the case because they were never given a chance to live the American dream- and get that education, or have a fair chance at getting a job because of their color. The U.S. government has something called, "affirmative action." They get free points on their college applications, and they have a better chance at getting into colleges. People always complain about this. But can I ask you something. Is it fair to not accept someone and give them the same equal chances because they went to a worse school that's not their fault? Why shouldn't we be giving equal chances. Do you remember the University of Michigan case that occured with affirmative action in 2003?
We have affirmative action because of the awful treatment to African Americans in our country until the 1960's. And, people are like, "Why should I be affected by this, I wasn't alive back then!" We'll, the reason you should be affected is because your society needs to be sorry for the mistakes that you did to your fellow citizens and this should be away of giving African Americans a chance to make a come back after not giving them a chance.

There was another incident in 2008, where someone lit the GSA float on fire, and there was not much of a reaction by the college campus as there was in this instance when a student wrote a horrible note on another student's. Why did this incident make it more important to address further than the float incident?

As an Indian American, I have seen people make very racist marks about my own race. Rememeber that guy who wanted to be re-elected as Senator in Virginia, but lost because he called an Indian American, a "mackacka". What about at the airports? Have you ever flown a flight and you get "randomly selected" to go through extra security? I think this is racial profiling, and this is wrong.

We need to remind ourselves, this is a country of Hindu's, Muslims, Christians, Jews and many more. This is a country of many ethnicities and diversity. If we want it to stay that way we cannot allow racism to be around.

Drinking in college

This last Friday, I was exhausted. I needed to relax, but I also wanted to go out with some of my friends to someone’s house to dance and have a good time for a few hours. However, I was on a mission. I was out to look at two different things. I wanted to know if people were drinking to black out, and if people were using illegal drug substances that are prohibited in the United States by law.

I was surprised by what I was seeing. Most people were taking shots, and by this point- you were wondering why exactly people are doing shots when they are completely intoxicated or at a stage they shouldn’t be drinking anymore. But on our college campus, alcohol is abused and used much more than you think. If you have no plans of going out anywhere, you can be rest assured that you are for the most part welcomed to any party, if you at least know of one person there. You’ll get free alcohol and you can let your worries go away- we’ll at least that’s why a lot of people do drink.

College campuses across the United States have began an effort to begin to ask the federal government to allow students to drink beginning at the age of eighteen. They want them to change the law. At The Ohio State University, you’ll be able to see the president of the university, Dr. Gorden Gee at parties on their campus which is surprising and interesting to ponder about.

But this weekend, I noticed people smoking outside one of the residence halls. I was curious at what they were smoking, but then I noticed it was a group of seven people sharing smoking marijuana. The occasional people were smoking cigarettes. My question is: If such an illegal substance of marijuana is being used by a lot of college students- why is this banned?
